Wireless is so cool!
So, I had to retire my old computer (which I have had since March 2002... it got me through college, yo!)-- it was full of viruses and it just wasn't doing it for me anymore. So, after getting an excellent coupon for Dell from Bach-boy (oh, he's sooo awesome!), I decided to purchase a new computer joint--- and it's awesome!!!!
I may be behind of the cool curve here, but this wireless thing is awesome. I'm sitting here in a coffee shop (that's like 1/4 of a block from the Starbucks, but it has funky music and it's virtually empty-- b/c everyone's at Starbucks!) and I'm just typing away on my comp... I love this wireless concept... Even though I do have a midterm due on Thursday and I am responsible for leading discussions for BOTH classes this week, I am just sitting here, having a great time reading the
Post,
Arts and Leisure Daily and the
Facebook (which is soooo addictive!).
In any case, I'm sure I'll be blogging more stuff later on today. I just had to share how awesome this is!!!
Alicia vs. Beyonce
OK, gang, I've been having debates with folks over the past several weeks about who's cooler. And I guess that this isn't necessarily a fair comparison b/c each artist is cool in her own right, but I'm sorry, there are some significant differences and people just choose to gloss over them when it comes to one of these artists (ahem, Beyonce).
Don't get me wrong, I love Beyonce-- she knows how to shake it and when I listen to her songs, I feel like yelling out "Girl Power" or something to that effect! But, when we really break it down, I think people like people because they feel that there's some form of relation and that a form of conversation could be held for longer than 5 minutes. I don't feel that with Beyonce... with Alicia, I feel that.
Alicia Keys:, she writes her own songs, she composes the songs and SHE PLAYS THE PIANO!!! She's capable of expressing her feelings in more than one medium, she's pretty aware of her surroundings and she has control over her sound, her talent and her appearance/stage presence, what have you. I feel that if I met her, we would be able to have a great conversation about anything. If she asked me what I did and she didn't necessarily understand the full nuances, she'd just ask me to clarify. And if she still didn't know what it all entailed or just didn't know what it was or didn't know a job like that actually existed, she'd actually enquire more into it. And she'd end it diplomatically with "Well, someone's gotta do it, right? Keep America safe, girl." and we'd just laugh about how unnecessarily complicated my job is and move on. The overall moral of this platform is that I think Alicia would, actually, show interest and she does not make it all about her!! Also, if she met Condoleezza Rice, she'd know who she was. (Yeah, I just had to throw that in)
Beyonce: yes, Beyonce writes songs too. I don't know if she plays any instruments, but that's all good. I cannot say that she's that well-spoken, nor can I say that she is that aware of her surroundings. I'm sorry, y'all, but it just seems like she's just does things because someone tells her to do it... not basic things like eating or drinking or keeping herself out of danger, etc... I think she has some agency in these events, etc. But as far as what she wears or what she sings, it seems like someone says : "Hey, B, you will be awesome if you wear this in this video or in this performance." Basically, she has the talent (singing, that is) and it's AWESOME. But as far channelling this talent, it seems like a whole bunch of people have more of a say in this. And it seems like if I met her and had the luxury of having a conversation with her and I told her what I did for a living, and she didn't get it, it seems like she'd just smile and nod and wouldn't want to know more either in fear of thinking that she should know all the details or because she wouldn't know where to begin. And while I think she knows who Condoleezza Rice may be, I don't think she'd know why Dr. Rice is potentially controversial.
And another thing-- I just think it shows plain quality when a singer can sit down at the piano, sing and connect with the audience rather than doing so much shaking, moving, dancing, jiggling in a video. Both are entertaining, yes, and both serve their purposes, but I'm just saying, it gets tiresome to watch Beyonce moving around on the screen. CAll me old-school, but Alicia just knows how to get your attention with the very reason why I'm buying the CD: her voice.
I'm sorry, I'm completely sold with Alicia's "Unplugged" CD, Bach-boy would almost say 'obsessed'. But Bach-boy is actually getting more into Ms. Keys, so there!
In any case, you guys can fight it out, too. But my decision is final on this issue!!!
Guess Who's Back?
Well, gang, after a long hiatus, I figured it was time to get back in the groove of things and continue with my blogging.
Well, what has been going on?
I guess with age comes wisdom. And I turned 25 a few weeks ago (yay!) and I have been having a ball since and have definitely been looking at things from a different perspective lately. There hasn't been anything individually profound that I should write about here, but collectively, I have been looking at things differently and just really trying to figure out where I stand on issues that I have been choosing to ignore for some time.
Yeah, so so much for that vague baloney there. For more concrete news:
Bach-boy continues to rock my world. :) He's someone that I admire so much for either very small things or very big things. Without getting too mushy about it, I think that he's one of the singlemost reasons why I am (re)examining a lot of issues (politics and otherwise) and while it can be overly frustrating at times, I feel like this is overall a very good thing for me (and for him!). Also, Bach-boy is such a sweetie pie!!!!!!!
Lots of gossip pertaining to work that I'm sure you all are not interested in nor want to be inundated with. And yes, I just ended that sentence with a preposition. :) But the gossip that keeps on flowing makes it all worthwhile to go to work in the first place! :)
Well, I'll continue to post and try to keep it short (or long-- depending on my mood). Just wanted to jot down a note to let y'all know I'm back! :)
